I also have a non-Apple car charger that I bought at Best Buy last July when I bought my 3GS. It worked perfectly until the latest Apple software update. Now when I plug it in, I get an error message that it is not an approved accessory, and it may cause interference with my phone, and asks if I want to switch the phone into airplane mode. I always select “No” and use the phone as usual. Sometimes I do notice a decrease in performance as far as signal strength and dropped calls, but it does charge the phone.
I’m wondering if Apple is coding the software to reject aftermarket cables and chargers so you have to buy authentic Apple accessories. It’s just a theory, but lots of people seem to be having problems with this cable.

Does not sync, does not charge, doesn’t do a damn thing. I have 32 gig iphone 3GS, cable is a waste O money!

this seemed to be better quality than the one that originally came with my Iphone. cord is heavy and is well made. I strongly recommend picking up a few of these for emergencies. the price is definitely right
