  • It's definitely a great bluetooth headset, don't get me wrong. But for what it's up against, it doesn't match up.

This was the probably my 5th bluetooth headset. My previous Blueant Q1BlueAnt Q1 Voice Controlled Bluetooth Headset (Black) seemed much much better (if only it hadn't died!). Anyway, as far as sound quality, I haven't got many complaints, but my wife tells me that my Blueant was so much quieter when I call her from in my car on the freeway.

The thing that drives me nuts about the 975 is that I can't make calls from it! When I'm driving in the car and my phone is in my pocket, the whole point of having my bluetooth is to not have to fumble to get in my pocket, pull out my phone, and dial the number I want to call. My Motorola bluetooths/blueteeth? allowed me to voice-dial (I would say "Mom" - phone would say, "calling 'Mom'"). My Blueant Q1 had speed-dial numbers programmed in. but there seems to be no way to make calls (except redial) from the 975!!

The carrying case / battery pack is an awesome feature. Comfort is very good.

In conclusion, it's a good BT, but not a very good "handsfree" set. For how much they are selling it for, I was expecting better. I'm thinking I'm gonna use my 30-day return policy to swap it for a Jawbone or another Blueant...

UPDATE: So I tried contacting Plantronics customer support online, and their CS rep insisted that it was my phone's fault, and their bluetooth should work fine when voice-dialing... so I asked them "how do you do it? walk me through the steps" at which point they faltered and disappeared for an hour, after which I got tired of waiting and disconnected. Lame. So I played around with my brother-in-law, a big big fan of Plantronics, and he figured out that the correct way to do this is to press the main button twice. Voila! Success! So I bumped the review up one star, even though their customer service is lame.

  • Connection with iPhone 3GS has a lot of static noise - very annoying. Also, voice dialing does not work with my iPhone 3GS. Unable to get voice dialing working after several calls with Plantronics customer support. I did not have either of these issues with my Jawbone Prime. Jawbone Prime worked flawlessly. I will be sending this headset back and ordering the superior Jawbone Prime - and for less money!

  • I'm loving this bluetooth headset. The sound quality is really great on both ends. I love how it reduces the background noise & the heavy breathing. It was very easy for me to find the right size earpiece cover (you get a choice of 3) to fit my ear. I wish it had a hook to go behind the ear but it's not too bad because it's not real uncomfortable like some of the similar headsets that I've tried in the past. The charging case is an excellent addition to this headset. It's very convenient & easy to use. I would highly recommend this bluetooth headset.

  • I decided to purchase this headset based on several sites with good user reviews. After wearing the headset for 10 days or so, I had to return it. It was by far the worst headset I have ever used. I use a bluetooth headset all day long as I am driving most of the of the day. In the past I have had a Jabra, Nokia, Plantronics and Blue Ant. The Blue Ant was by far the best headset, it just has a little design flaw that after a month or so the earhook becomes loose and the earpiece starts to fall out of one's ear.

As for the Plantronics Discovery 975:

Pro - the charging case and sleek look

Cons - The parties on the other end always had an echo.

    - The lack of an earhook option, I thought I could live with just the in the ear piece, but it fell out too often no matter which size gel I used. I preferred the mid-size one, but it muffled the voices to much on my end to hear anyone properly.

    - Last, it says it is a multipoint device, but I never could get it to pair with both of the phones I use. If I connected it to my Blackberry Storm first, it would not connect to my Palm Centro. If I connected to the Palm Centro first, the Blackberry Storm would cancel out the Palm as soon as I connected it. I missed quite a few calls on my Palm phone while driving due to not being able to answer on my headset.

I ended up replacing it with a Motorola H790. I was skeptical about Motorola headsets for years as they rarely have gotten good reviews, but H790 has good user reviews and I believe Motorola has finally nailed it on making a quality headset with great noise cancelling. The H790 is by far a more superior headset to the Plantronics Discovery 975 and is substantially less expensive.
