Belly Dance

The first westerners to see Raqs Sharqi (‘dance from the east’) were Napoleon’s troops when they invaded Egypt in 1798. But Belly dancing is big in Turkey and the Middle-East where skimpier costumes and more overt sexuality is allowed.

Pole Dancing

This one has a pretty vague origin history. It involves a scantily clad dancer moving sensually over a vertical pole, sometimes combined with striptease, and/or lap dancing. It’s not easy as it looks and takes muscular endurance and coordination as well as sensuality.

Salsa

Salsa is a fusion of informal dance styles having its roots in the Caribbean, Latin and Anglo America. The name ‘salsa’ is a Spanish word for sauce, connoting (in American Spanish) a spicy flavor. It is usually a partner dance, and is both sensuous and flirtatious.

Flamenco

Born of persecuted gypsies of Andalusia, flamenco is a pastiche of desire, struggle and pain. From the curve smooching skirts of the women to the toreador machismo of the men, it’s filled with razor-sharp attitude and fierce yearning.

‘Ote’a

The ʻōteʻa is one of the few dances which already existed in pre-European times as a male dance. Fast-paced drumming, elaborate headdress and hula performed by alluring dancers. And yes, the attire includes two strategically placed coconuts and grass skirts. From Tahiti to Hawaii, this one’s a Pacific mocktail for sure!

Tango

Denounced by the society and confined to brothels and bars, Tango had inauspicious beginnings in the 19th century. Like most naughty things though, it tempted good boys and girls- replacing the respectable waltz. With slithering walks and intertwining limbs, closely positioned derrières and seductive spontaneity, it’s not hard to see why the entire Argentina succumbed.
